How to Select Keywords

The process of contractor web design is a detailed process of building a lasting, preselling machine. The development plan of any contractor web design is of critical importance and the first component of that plan is the selection of keywords. There are many different ways of discovering what keywords to use in your contractor web design development plan. The first is knowledge. Knowledge of your specific business and what your customers and prospects are looking for is the first resource to draw on. The second is your industry "buzz" words. For example, if you're in the landscaping business, the word hardscape becomes an industry buzz word.

Most people who are looking for paving stones, curbs, edging and other "hard" features in their landscape, will use this word as a general search phrase to identify what they're looking for. Another industry specific term if you are a general contractor would be tilt-up-construction. If an architect or engineer was looking for a contractor to build a commercial structure, this would be a possible term used. The third possibility for determining keywords is to use a professional contractor web design company that have years of experience in designing websites in your industry. Any way you choose to do it, it is extremely important.

Let me explain why. The search engines find a contractors website by storing the words in your website in a giant catalog. This catalog then ranks your site content (words) into its data base for future reference. Every time someone uses the search engine to locate a specific word or series of words the search engine searches its database to establish which words it has cataloged that are most relevant to the search word or phrase. Then those sites, based on the search engine algorithm, are displayed in order of relevance to the search criteria. So, if your keywords are either to broad or to specific the results that you can expect are greatly reduced.

Why is this so important?

If you are building your site to generate leads for your business, you need traffic that is looking for your service to generate those leads. And if you are like most business owners, you're interested in doing this in the least expensive way possible, which in the case of high search rankings, is free based upon the initial design of your website, than this is the key to the success of your website. If however, you don't care about the associated cost of generating leads for your business, which the rationality of escapes me, you can always spend hundreds and or thousands of dollars on pay-per-click advertising.

Even then, understanding the words and phrases your customers are looking for is of huge importance. Let me give you an example. Let's assume you are a general contractor again and you're target is residential home building. Would "tilt up construction" be an appropriate search phrase for you to locate customers looking for your services? Probably not. In fact, if you are on a pay-per-click program where you are paying for each click from the search engine to your site, this could be a very costly mistake. The concept of keyword selection and research is vital to the "relevant" traffic to your site.

When you look inside your industry for buzz words be careful not to put a great amount of importance on the fad type buzz words. Several years ago in the contracting business, the Radon scare was on every ones mind. Is the Radon epidemic still a huge concern? Is it being publicized in the media as much as say 10-15 years ago? How about mold contractors? Is this business a fad or will it be enduring? In selection of keywords, look to your prospective customers and let them decide what terms and phrases are the most relevant.

So now you have selected several words that you believe your customers will use to find companies that offer the services that you do, what do you do now? You integrate them into your site. Text, headlines, navigation, tier 1,2, and 3 pages. Through this integration, you develop content that the search engines love and most importantly, your human visitors value.
